How has popular culture shaped my life.Well when I was little my mom could not afford to buy all the cool popular things. So I got teased by other kids, pretty cruel to do to a kid. It still happens today with young kids. When I got a job at 16 and realized how much the cool things cost I was not interested in it anymore. I bought stuff from other stores and got more for less. I am into popular music always have been. I went through the tight as skin jeans stage. I am now 34 years old and todays popular clothes are raunchy. Stores are trying to sell hoochy mama clothes for little girls and some parents are buying them then wondering why other people are staring at her daughters. Most of the popular clothes I would never wear even if I had the body for them. I do not see how jeans that show your underwear or the crack of your butt is cool. Some of the fashions that were popular when I was a child are making a repeat appearance. So are some toy's making a comeback. I guess popular culture has not made a good impression on me. I can handle the tight jeans I used to wear them even low cut shirts but the jeans going down to your knees needs to go . I do not want to see someone else's underwear thong!!!

LOL!! I can most definately relate you. I started working when I was 15yrs old and I had to buy my own clothes cause my mom or dad would not give me money for the cool stuff. But when I made my own money, I didn't wanna spend that much on the cool stuff. Im like that even now. I started my own trend with cheaper clothes and shoes and now I have everyone wondering where I go shopping at.
I completely understand. I started workin at 13. When I had the money to buy "cool" stuff I didn't want it. I cared more about saving for a car, which I think is also a part of popular culture. And yes todays clothes are pretty bad..I don't understand the in-style clothes today. I wouldnt wanna spend 50 or more bucks on a pair of ripped jeans!
Great post, Angie! :-D
I remember those ridiculous skin tight jeans. Do you remember the Calvin Klein commercials with Brooke Shields?
I do agree with you about popular clothes being raunchy. It is very difficult for me to find appropriate clothing for my ten-year old daughter.
Alas, I must pose a question (as the instructor of this class). What do you think made these clothes popular? What, in our culture, has made it appropriate and acceptable for little girls to dress like backup dancers for Britney Spears?
Even though Im only 20 yrs old, I can see where you are coming from. The clothes for girls to wear that are out today look kinda trampy if you ask me. Im glad that the pop culture didnt make you wear the clothes that were "in". Its all about being yourself and wearing what makes you comfortable and confident, not slutty or raunchy!
I completely agree with you, Maggie!
I'm lucky, in a sense, that neither of my girls wants to dress like that. It doesn't make clothes shopping any easier, though.
